The Festival Program Book goes from concept to the hands of festival goers within roughly three
weeks and I have the inconsistent service of the CTA to thank for it’s design. After nearly a week
of rough layouts nothing was clicking with the book. I started to figure I had lost my touch and
with a 20-hour Friday coming to a close I wanted to get home quick. This wouldn’t be the case,
but it was on this 2-hour journey home that the very Chicagoan world of primary colors, public
transportation, and Helvetica all started to make sense. The book basically designed itself
from that point on.

The most interesting element in the book is the interaction of the contents page with the tabs marking
each section. The contents page functions somewhat like a combination lock. Using color bands that
line up with the section markers, it offers another layer of information when locating pages.
